Our Dealership

History of the Jonker Auto Group

Jonker Auto Group is comprised of Jonker Nissan and Jonker Honda.

Jonker Honda

In 1969, Canadian Honda Motors Ltd. (now Honda Canada Inc.) was established. The Honda vehicles were all built in Japan, and shipped to Vancouver as the port of entry. By October of 1974 the first Hondas were sold in Langley along with other"imports" such as Volvo, British Leyland, and Jaguar. The dealership was known as Langley Automotive, and a temporary structure on the site carried the first Langley Honda sign.

Langley Automotive / Langley Honda was located on Highway 10 next to the present McDonald's franchise at the corner of Fraser Highway and the Langley Bypass. Ken Huber, the owner, also owned the McDonald's franchise, but he eventually sold it along with his other import lines as the sales of Honda cars increased. Within two years Langley Honda was a stand alone franchise in the old Langley Automotive building.

Over the years, Honda sales increased, and in1990 a new dealership was built at 19515 Langley Bypass, in the middle of Langley's "Auto Mile". It featured a 6 car showroom, and a service shop with 9 service bays.

In 1996 Langley Honda was purchased by Karel and Karen Jonker. A new building was constructed next to the Honda building to accommodate their Langley Nissan franchise.

In 1998 the names of the two dealerships were changed to Jonker Nissan and Jonker Honda. The change was brought about to identify their mutual ownership, and also because the buildings are located in the municipality of Surrey, not Langley.

Our business continues to grow. A major renovation was completed in the fall of 2006. Jonker Honda has doubled in size from 15,000 to 30,000 sq. ft. Our service department features 20 service bays as well as drive through service lanes for quick oil changes. New office space, display area, and signage will complete the renovation of Jonker Honda so we can better serve our growing customer base in the community.

Jonker Nissan

The vehicles we now know as “Nissans” were first exported to Canada in 1966 as “Datsuns”. These vehicles were built in Japan, and Vancouver was the port of entry and also the national headquarters for the Canadian arm of Nissan Motor Company, who built Datsuns.

Langley was home to one of the first dealerships in the country selling the popular little Datsuns. The dealership opened in 1967. Originally named “Valley Datsun”, it was located on Fraser Highway across the street from the original Save On Foods store in Langley. It had a very small showroom and service operation.

In 1982 Nissan Motor Company dropped the Datsun name in Canada and re-branded their vehicles as Nissan, a name they used in other countries throughout the world. At that time Valley Datsun changed its name to Langley Nissan. A change of location was made to 20567 Langley Bypass, close to Glover Road.

In 1990 Langley Nissan was purchased by Karel and Karen Jonker. A new building was constructed at 19372 Langley Bypass to accommodate Langley’s growing customer base of Nissan owners. The service department now had 4 service bays. But our business continued to grow.

In 1996 a permanent site for a larger facility was found; it was right across the street and next to the Langley Honda dealership. The Honda dealership was part of this purchase, and in 1998 the names of the two dealerships were changed to Jonker Nissan and Jonker Honda.

We opened our newly constructed Jonker Nissan building on October 19, 1999. We went from a 7,500 sq ft. building to a 16,000 sq. ft. building with 11 service bays, a service drive-through and a 5 car showroom.

AWARD of EXCELLENCE presented to Jonker Nissan

Jonker Nissan and the Community...

Dry Grad Cars

The Jonker Auto Group initiated their Dry Grad Car program in 1998 after a tragic accident resulted from drinking and driving. The dealership, its employees and suppliers all work together to prepare a Nissan vehicle as the grand prize in a draw for a Dry Grad celebration. Local high schools use the car to help sell tickets to their Dry Grad.

Now its eleventh year, the grand prize car has led to a dramatic increase in attendance. A total of 33 cars have been presented to local high school grads at Lord Tweedsmuir, Clayton Heights, and Walnut Grove Secondary.

Langley Meals on Wheels

Since 1992 Jonker Nissan, in partnership with the Nissan Canada Foundation has been providing and servicing vehicles to Langley Meals on Wheels.

In January 2004 Langley Meals on Wheels celebrated their 25th year of operation. They estimate they have served over 500,000 meals and driven at least as many kilometers over that time.
